Ghosts On Tape

One of the acts that I have been digging on as of late is Bay Area Tropical Crunk stalwart Ghosts On Tape. His newest EP, Predator Mode is out now and features remixes from Roska. To me, Ghosts is a great combo of glitch, club bass, and all around electronic madness. XLR8R recently had GOT prepare a podcast their newest city guide feature on their own website. The mix is top notch and goes all over the place...so get acquainted people!

So I got some brand new Don Diablo in the e-mail box for all of you blog rats! So far, I'm digging it. Not only do I have the original but I also have a remix to share with all of you as well. the remix is a bit lacking in the vocal department, but more dance heavy for all of you who simply want to groove out.

Ban THIS!!!!

This is because I love all you guys out there that have been giving Strictly Riddim some burn. After watching this, it really is hard to believe that 20 years has passed since the release of Powell Peralta's revolutionary video "Ban This". Simply put, the styles in this video are still off the chain to this day. And the music in the video? Absolutely bananas?

This was back when skateboarding was huge, but nothing compared to what it is now. Just look at Guy Mariano, Paulo Diaz, and Ray Barbee's parts in this. The style and aggressiveness of this type of skating was so unique, yet so monumental. Yes this has very little to do with blog house, but it does at the same time....think about it yo!

Strictly Riddim News for the rest of 2009 and beyond...

Keeping it gully as usual. Alot of you who have been reading this blog have probably been wondering what will be happening with this blog...well...I've got great news for y'all!

1. Strictly Riddim is moving it's base of operations to NEW YORK FUCKING CITY in the next couple of months for 2010 and will be setting up some awesome parties in the area very soon!

2. More Music

3. More Interviews

4. More mayhem.

And that's all...keep it posted.

A Tribute to Roc Raida

R>I>P to one of the greatest to ever do it on the ones and twos. It was around this time last year that I saw Roc Raida here in Pittsburgh kill it. However, in true 21st century fashion, Raida's turntables were decked out with Serato control vinyls and a laptop. Nevertheless, for someone as passionate about DJing and music as myself, it was a true pleasure to behold. He was playing some of the most well known hip-hop songs that had come out since the late eighties and then some. Everything from M.O.P's "Ante Up" to The White Stripes,"Seven Nation Army". The crowd was loving it, the breakers were breakin', and the atmosphere was right. If anything, that perfomance was a great example of how DJing is done...whether you're spinning house or hip-hop.

After typing this, I would like to thank all the DJs out there for doing their thing....To show our appreciation for your support...thank you DJs.

Magik Johnson

Magik Johnson Makes His Mark with Debut Release for Potty Mouth Music - “Stand Up EP” features three original tracks and includes a remix by Calvertron!

CHICAGO—Taking a nod from tech-house heavyweights including Crookers, Jesse Rose and SIS, producer Magik Johnson unveils his latest trick for Potty Mouth Music with “Stand Up EP” (PMM029). In showcasing a range of deep, tribal and peak hour grooves, Johnson’s debut label EP reflects the diversity of his multi-decade music career. The result is three-track collection of original beats, capped with a jazz-inspired remix from UK electro-house producer Calvertron.

“I really wanted to make three tracks that were dance floor friendly and represented what I am in the playing in the clubs,” says Johnson, whose earliest deck days date back to the late ’80s, when rocked his own room at Manchester’s legendary Hacienda.

Since then, Johnson has gone on to establish himself as one of the most venerable artists in the business, blurring the lines of house and techno while remaining true to the nuanced complexities of each genre. Production stints with Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paper Recordings collective all led to his launch of Shaboom Records, which developed into one of the world’s most respected dance labels.

Since relocating from the UK to Auckland, New Zealand nearly 10 years ago, Johnson has channeled the his darker influences from the Manchester music scene into his original production work, debuting his first album, Cardboard Journey, in 2005. The launch of his digital label, Magiktrax, coupled by his inclusion on Darren Emerson’s Underwater roster, led to releases on acclaimed labels including Made to Play, Saved and Curfew.

Now Johnson adds Potty Mouth Music to the mix with the release of “Stand Up EP.” The record’s uptempo, title track resonates with a synth-driven neurosis set to audibly prick peak-hour crowds. Pair that with the deep, rolling groove of “Make You See,” a late night, tribal-tinged cut framed by vocal chants and dotty bassline. Johnson drifts between the two vibes with “Boy Blew,” a steady track that gets a jazz rework from Calvertron. In melding his signature wonky basslines with horn samples and classic keys, electro-house and organic jazz find an unexpectedly smooth match.

Moving...

So, all of you are probably wondering where the fuck I have been. Well, I'm still alive...I've just been in the process of moving from one place to another. With that said, I'll be taking a short hiatus from Strictly Riddim (which will only last two days) to pack up everything at my old place and set up shop at my new location. Keep on moving people...keep on moving!

Groovin...

Here's some new stuff I've been listening to as of late. I've got some offerings from Dam Funk and Hudson Mohawke.

Dam Funk is from Los Angeles and has a new album coming out on Stones Throw Records in the next couple. Don't sleep on dude though, he is a highly funky individual and it shows through his DJ sets and own productions as he blends G-Funk, Soul, R&B and vintage grooves in a highly conceptualized yet smooth new package.

Hudson Mohawke represents Glasgow and the Polyfolk movement and has an album out on the legendary Warp Records entitled "Butter". Honestly, I can't help but stand in absolute bewilderment of HudMo's material. He combines hip-hop, abstract funk, and post-IDM noises in a very prolific way. The last track in the post, "Rising 5" sounds likes a Just Blaze production from the Blueprint 3. I feel the magic in the air on that! Check out both of these artists and more.

Throwback Thursdays!

You know what time it is. It's time for another throwback record!

Kraftwerk is a name that shouldn't be alien to anyone who visits this blog. I've always been a big fan of their works and have almost all of their discography on vinyl to play out during certain DJ nights. "Numbers" is a song that always will end up in my repertoire whether I like it or not. The synth keys are instantly recognizable, it has a chugging rhythm, hot synth hits, and a drum line like no other.

This one is dedicated to all the heads from across the pond and all of the real heads in Detroit. You know what time it is!
